Taking a bumboat to Pulau Ubin

Taking a bumboat to Pulau Ubin

The bumboat between Changi Point Ferry Terminal and Pulau Ubin is privately managed and usually runs on demand daily from 6am to 7pm.

Boats usually leave when 12 passengers are aboard. Operators may agree to take fewer passengers by private arrangement, at a higher fare per person. The usual fare is $4 per person each way, with an additional $2 for a bicycle; confirm the fare before departure. The crossing typically takes 10 minutes.

Since the service is on demand, you may need to wait for enough passengers to gather. Keep that in mind when planning how much of the day to spend on the island, especially if you intend to bring a bicycle.

Pulau Ubin’s designated trails can be explored on foot or by bicycle, and local van services are another way to get around.

The island’s past is part of its landscape. It was once five smaller islands separated by tidal rivers; bunds built for prawn farming joined them together. Granite mining later supported a few thousand settlers, and abandoned quarries remain as reminders of that industry.

For a walk, the Sensory Trail is an easy route that takes about 1 hour to complete. If you want a higher viewpoint, Bukit Puaka is the island’s highest point at 74 metres, with views of Ubin Quarry, mainland Singapore and Malaysia.

Chek Jawa Wetlands occupies the eastern end of the island, 3 km from the public jetty. Its facilities include the Coastal and Mangrove Boardwalks, Jejawi Tower and Visitor Centre.

The intertidal flats are best suited to a visit at low tide of 0.5 metres or below; at higher tides, they are submerged. The wetlands and facilities are open daily from 7am to 7pm.

Teck Seng’s Place is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with a closure from 12pm to 1pm. For cycling, Ketam Mountain Bike Park has 10 km of trails suitable for all skill levels.

Choose your route with the day’s priorities in mind: a walk on the Sensory Trail, time at Bukit Puaka, a ride at Ketam Mountain Bike Park or the trip out to Chek Jawa.

NParks advises sticking to designated paths, trails, roads, tracks and boardwalks, and keeping left. Visitor rules prohibit feeding or releasing wild animals, littering and using personal mobility devices.

Return planning and practical preparations

Return planning and practical preparations

Plan your return around the bumboat service’s usual operating hours, rather than assuming a boat will be waiting at the island jetty.

For travel outside the usual 6am–7pm hours, arrange the bumboat with an operator in advance. If no boat is available at the jetty for your return, call the NParks helpline at 1800-471 7300.

Before setting off, check current bus, boat and site details with the relevant official operators, including NParks. Tide conditions matter for the intertidal flats at Chek Jawa, while opening hours and fares can change.
